Training Skills

  • Delivery of a pre-prepared training session on a work-related topic of the participant's choice.

N.B. The duration of each participant's training session depends on the course length and the number of attendees. Eight participants is the ideal number.

  • Comprehensive one-to-one and group feedback

Preparing a Training Session

  • Key questions for the trainer to consider in advance:
    • Why am I the right person for this?
    • Logistics: What, where, when, how – and how long?
    • Understanding how the answers to these questions shape the session structure
  • Structuring the content:
    • Research – gaining thorough subject knowledge
    • Organizing the content logically
    • Creating and using supplementary visual aids

Preparing the Trainer

  • Three fundamental communication tools for a trainer:
    • Verbal – choosing the right words and avoiding slang and jargon
    • Vocal – modulating tone while avoiding distracting verbal tics and pauses
    • Visual – the presenter's appearance: attire, mannerisms, and presence
  • Rehearsing the training session and obtaining honest feedback from a trusted source
  • Managing nerves

Preparing the Environment

  • Room layouts and how they convey subtle messages to attendees
  • Using the room to enhance the training experience
  • Setting up for cleanup after the course

Evaluation

  • The importance of evaluation
  • Processes for obtaining and utilizing participant feedback

Training Skills – Revisited

  • Delivery of another training session (after adequate preparation time).

N.B. This may be the same presentation as in Module 1, revised based on detailed feedback.
